After having been in Leeds for a while, you probably already have a few things that you find hard to wrap your head around about the UK and the way things are done here. This country definitely has its quirks and as foreigners ourselves, we came up with a top list of weird things.
- Different taps for hot and cold water
Come on UK, welcome to the 21st century where it actually is possible to have a tap where the temperature can be adjusted. There is nothing more annoying than trying to wash up and having to choose between burning your hands or freezing them off.
2. Switches on sockets
All the electrical sockets have switches to turn them on or off. What a nice surprise when you’re trying to charge your phone and after an hour realise the switch wasn’t on. Funny how the rest of the world survives just fine even though there is electricity coming out the sockets all the time.
3. Cars drive on the wrong side of the road
For most countries of the world, the left side really is the wrong side. I can admit that I have been living in the UK for five months now and I still look the wrong way when I cross the road. Also for example the stairs are designed to be left-sided and locks unlock the wrong way.
4. British politeness
Depending on where you are coming from, the general politeness of people might feel a bit overwhelming. Just remember to apologise for every single thing you do and you’ll do just fine.
Chips and/or beans everyday and with everything, and then there are the weird traditional foods such as the Yorkshire pudding or black pudding for breakfast. And yeah, why is everything called pudding?
But dear UK, we love you anyway.
